I took my mother-in-law and a couple of the nieces down to the SF bay area today for a nephew's first communion. It wasn't a bad day at all. The weather was nice, and no one complained about what was playing on satellite radio.

The nephew and his family live about a mile or two from where I grew up, just around the corner from a girl who I had a crush on in 6th grade. My friend and I snuck out of the house one night and rode our bikes over there when the girls were having a slumber party. Her mom caught us all sitting there at about three a.m. "What are these boys doing here?"

"What boys?", her daughter, always quick on the draw, responded. I wonder what ever happened to her.

I took MiL and the nieces around to see where I used to live and go to school. I pointed out a place where we used to sneak cigarettes between classes in high school. "I used to smoke there", I commented.

"Smoke what?" asked one of the nieces. Fair question.

The first communion Mass was good. It's nice to just attend a Mass without having to be involved with planning it or preaching at it or something. After the Mass we went to a steak house for lunch, and then to see my sister-in-law's new dental clinic. She is a dentist. I guess that explains why she has a clinic.

It was pretty cool messing around in a dentist's office, pretending to drill each other's teeth and stuff, raising and lowering the chairs. The asked me to bless the clinic, but I didn't have my book of blessings, so I had to wing it:

"Uh, bless this waiting room, and keep all who uh, sit here from getting too nervous about, uh, getting their teeth fixed."

Everyone fell asleep on the way home except for me, so it was a nice time to think. More on what I thought about later.
