54116--yes.

I got up at the same time as Malida this morning--something we hardly ever do. I had an appointment to photograph the state librarian downtown, so had to leave fairly early.

The state librarian turned out to be a friendly and welcoming woman, who is a big advocate for the future of electronic books. Interestingly, she suggested we use the rare books room to shoot in. It made for a nice contrast.

the rocket
The hands of the California State Librarian, holding one of the first e-book readers, the Rocket, from the late 1990's.

After the shoot was done I went to the coffee shop to edit the pics and upload them to my new photo editor. Normally I'd just wait until I got home, but it was an early deadline.

The coffee shop has a couple of big tables--they look like something you'd serve Christmas dinner on. Each one seats 8. I guess they're good for study groups. They have the advantage of having all sorts of electrical outlets below, which makes them popular for people with things to plug in. Like me.

I sat across from a young woman studying neuroanatomy--the cranial nerves. I remember trying to memorize all that stuff. It's still all rolling around in my head somewhere.

I went to the shopping mall to get some perfume for Malida. Normally I don't care for the mall, but there was hardly anyone there today (except for the packed-full Apple store), so it was tolerable.

After I finished with the mall, I drove out to the river to see what the water levels looked like. They're still high, but not as high as the were the last time I was down there. There were lots of people out enjoying the beautiful spring day.

zigurrat
As I said, a beautiful day.

locomotive
There were a pair of old rusty steam locomotives out near the railroad museum. Jack Gallagher, a local humorist, was filming something in front of them, but after he was done I took some shots. They are pretty impressive, and seem like works of art. I thought about how they must have awed and amazed people when they first rolled
down the tracks.

disc
Imagine, these guys were already old when someone decided that Superman was more powerful than them. "Maybe he is", they whisper, "but you should have seen us in our prime."

And finally, some public art.

first
I saw this on the way to the State library, and decided to stop on the way back to look at it again. It's at 9th and "O".

second
As I was photographing it, some guy in a suit walked past and said, in a clearly snarky voice, "That's photo-worthy?"

third
"yes," I whispered to myself as I kept shooting,
"yes.

which is all moments before.

But I don't think he was listening.
