Holiday spirit
Dec. 24th, 2004 01:20 pmYes, I did end up getting a tree--a live frazer fir, that can be planted when I am done messing with it. It sat out on the front patio for the past week, wondering if it would ever see the inside of the house. It complained to the cactus, who was curiously unsympathetic to the tree's plight.
I spent a little time yesterday with a gentle and wise franciscan friar, who helped awaken a spark of hope. When I came home last night, I hauled that little tree inside and set it up. I rescued a snail who came along for the ride.
I brought all the christmas stuff in from the garage and looked through it. I set up one of the nativity sets on the dining room table, and put the christmas cards around it. It is from Bangladesh--the characters are all carved out of beautiful black stone. It is my favorite. Usually we have a beautiful red tablecloth on the table during christmas, but I have no idea where it is. They say you can't take it with you, but I think she did.
When I got to the ornaments, I had to stop for the night. A little at a time. I got up early this morning, though, and pressed on. I hung some lights, some angels, a few pigs, and then all of the personalized ornaments that we had collected for every year we were together. It was ok.
When I was done, I made a cup of tea and sat there, reflecting on what the franciscan had told me. He spoke of hope--hope that war will be replaced by peace, that the hungry will be fed, that wanderers and refugees will find their way home. That pain will someday be replaced by joy. There is light in the distance. Hope.

Merry Christmas
