This would normally be a clinical day, but since tomorrow is a holiday for us, we had the students come in and do skills competencies. It'a a half-day affair, and a great way to ease into the four-day weekend. I don't really like skills days, but it is easier than walking around the hospital for 8 hours, so I tolerate it.

The students asked me to take their class picture today as well. They wanted it in front of the old building, so we walked over and I took the pictures. It was the first time using my new camera for class pictures, and it worked like a champ. I have been using it so much that I didn't really even have to think about what I was doing with it. I like that it is becoming second nature.

class of 2018

The class of Spring, 2018.

It was windy today, and it made me crabby and gave me a headache. I kept my head down and my mouth shut, and got through the day. I came home and took a nap, and felt better afterwards. In the afternoon I walked in the park. It's the first time I have walked there for more than a week. Everything is the same. I walked about twice as far as normal, which is two loops, or a little more than three miles. It felt good.

Malida and I both have the day off tomorrow, so we will take the ferry to San Francisco and walk around taking pictures. It is supposed to be sunny and about 62, which is about perfect. I'm looking forward to it. I haven't walked around SF for a while.

I don't really have any big plans for the long weekend. Malida is working Saturday, and I am taking my car in for a recall, so I will probably stick close to home and get caught up on some stuff I need to get caught up on. On Monday I will head back down to the Bay Area to scope out the Point Reyes area in anticipation of my photo class field trip coming up in April. I want to get down there early enough to see the sunrise, so I will have to leave at about 4 am. Maybe.

bad nuns

I saw this on a white car parked next to me today. At first I took the pic so I could use it as my subject line, but decided it was a ready-made black and white image. So there.

I haven't been in much of a mood to write lately. It's like I'm out of words.

Slept well, and woke up not feeling sick at all--first time in 2 weeks. I dreamed about an old wooden building. I don't remember anything else about the dream other than the building.

I went through all of our financial stuff this morning and put together the things we will need when we see our tax accountant, sometime in the hazy near-future. Maybe next week.

After getting all that in order, I went to the creek trail for a walk. It was cooler than yesterday, but still warmer than usual, and no rain. It was windy and some clouds blew in, but that was about it.

After I came home and we rested from our labors, we headed down to Old Town Sacramento so Malida could take pictures. We got some late afternoon shots, then had dinner. After dinner she did some night shots of the old bridge and the capitol building. She had fun, as did I.

I had to get up at 5 today, but it was much easier after getting to bed before 10. I woke up in a remarkably good mood, that kept up throughout the day. Getting a good night's sleep seems to be working.

Malida got home from school this afternoon and was all hot to go out and practice photography, so I grabbed my camera and off we went. It was less than an hour until sunset, so we headed to the old part of town, where we could shoot for a while, then go have some dinner.

the photographer

Malida concentrates. She's still trying to figure out f-stop and shutter speed, but she's getting there. She has to start putting together her portfolio for class, so we will got out again this weekend.

We had a nice dinner at the Brick House. I had a steak, but could only finish a third of it, so Malida took some for her lunch, and I saved the rest for tomorrow's dinner. They have the best Italian salad!

I had my doctor visit today, and everything looked good. My blood pressure was well within the normal range, and he was pleased with my progress. He said not to worry about the A1c unless it gets above 6, so I'm ok there too. Back again in 6 months.

The only thing I didn't like was that, when we were looking at the labs on the computer, he tapped my age up on the screen and started, "For an older man...". Nope. I reject the idea that I am an older man. I remember when my grandma, at age 85, moved into a retirement community and complained about all the old people there.

She was born 108 years ago today. She lived to be 93, though she believed she had made it to 100. No one told her otherwise. Happy birthday Grandma!

I mentioned my lingering cough to the doctor and he told me I could expect to have it for about a month. "Don't get sick again," he added. Ok.

I went to bed at 9:15 last night! Slept great and got up to to to the farmers market. I felt pretty good--well rested.

There were lots of people at the farmers market this morning. I bought two big bags of produce, as well as some mixed nuts and a hunk of garlic jack cheese. It was a good haul. I also bought an outdoor orchid to keep my other orchid company.

avocado

I love how avocados have a glow.

After the market I went for a walk, then met Malida and we went for lunch at the noodle place. I had the usual. After we ate we did some grocery shopping and came home. I prepped some ribs to cook later in the day.

We took a nap. After the nap I out the ribs in to slow-cool, then watched the Super Bowl game. It was a great game, and I am glad Philadelphia won. During halftime I finished making dinner, and we ate as we watched the rest of the game.

I am going to an all-day test writing class tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. I love writing test questions, and want to be the best test-question writer ever! lol.

It was a nice day, so I decided to go out for a drive and take some pictures. I had some breakfast first, then took off. I didn't have particular destination, but knew I wanted to drive along the Michigan Bar-Ione Road, and take a picture of the old bridge abutments.

bridge

The old bridge. I love this spot. When I first stopped, there were cows, but they got scared and hid behind the old abutment on the right. Cows are strange.

I ended up driving along a road I had never driven before. I thought it would take me to Clinton, but it seems as if there is no specific Clinton, just a general area. I started out on East Clinton Road and came out on West Clinton road, which meets the highway about 4 miles west of where I got off.

I was surprised to find a little art gallery at the end of Clinton Road. I was even more surprised that I knew the gallery, from when it used to be in the town of Sutter Creek, just up from the Knight Foundry.

faces

Faces on the fence.

I stopped in the town of Jackson and had some lunch in the basement bar of an old hotel. I had the french dip, which was delicious. The bartender asked if I wanted some horseradish to go with it. "Yep," I said.

"Creamy or rough?" he asked.

I opted for rough. I've never heard non-creamy horseradish referred to as "rough", but it makes perfect sense. I took my time with the sandwich. I had a couple glasses of water. I'm making an effort to focus more on adequate hydration.

wooden face

I saw this as I was walking away from lunch. It was a full body, but behind some bars, so difficult to photograph the whole thing. I settled for this much, which seems like enough.

While I was walking around, one of my students sent me an email asking what they were supposed to address in their journal this week. I wrote back "write what you're thinking about."

I was exhausted at the end of work yesterday, and sent the students home a half-hour early, which they seemed happy about. I think they were all going to happy hour somewhere. I came home and took a nap, but still felt worn out. I went to bed at 9, which is much earlier than usual, and woke up at 6 this morning feeling great.

Malida is at work, so I think I will go out and explore.
