Bangkok day 1
Feb. 9th, 2007 09:22 pmI love Bangkok.
It is now 12:25 in the afternoon of Saturday--Friday night at 9:25 pm back home (I think).
It is so alive! There is something going on at all hours of the day and night. It is both foreign, and familiar, in some strange way. Anyway, I feel right at home.
I got in yesterday afternoon, after a relatively uneventful flight. I met the tour leader at the airport and we shared a taxi into town. He is a hmanitarian photojournalist, and does a lot of work for relief organizations, so we had a lot to talk about.
After I got to the hotel, I walked around for a while, then rested. We went out and looked around the area last night and had dinner. The food is great--lots of good things to choose from. I had some sort of shrimp thing with rice. Mmmmm.
Just a few blocks from our hotel is the Night Market--a couple of streets completely given over to street vendors, between the hours of 6 pm and 2 am. They set up every evening, and are gone by morning. It is a riot! You can get anything there. Really. I took my camera out and wandered around for a while. I was pretty exhausted by then, but wanted to get on a regular sleep schedule while I'm here.

I got up this morning and had a nice cup of coffee (yay!) and then walked around the city for a while--down to the river and back up one of the busy streets. Our formal tour doesn't start until this evening, so it is a free day. I'm not sure what I will do--maybe just wander around some more or give in and take a tuk-tuk ride.
