57097--running up that hill
Mar. 13th, 2014 09:10 pmAs I was driving home today I noticed the fields near my house are painted in yellow blossoms. Mustard I guess. I always like seeing that. Pretty soon everything will be brown again, so I enjoy it while it lasts.
I was reminded of an afternoon in southern Alberta. I had been bumming around the area for a few days and had gone up to Edmonton to have lunch with
pasticcio, but really didn't know what to do next. I was driving along a secondary road taking pictures of a creek. A farmer came along in his truck and asked what I was doing. I told him I was taking pictures. He asked if I wanted to go with him to see where his cows were. "The view is spectacular," he said. So I followed him up the hill.
He was right--it was a spectacular view. I could see in all directions. We were surrounded by yellow. As I was standing there looking, a little girl in a red shirt came running up the hill, a big smile on her face. Her parents appeared a few seconds later. The girl's name was Esther. They had come up the hill to pick berries. I got to talking with the girl's father, who asked what I was doing in these parts. I told him I was just wandering. He said, "You ought to drive over to Cereal--they got a great grain elevator museum there." It was the start of an adventure.

It's not the greatest picture. It was before I knew much about photography, but it really captured the moment for me.
