On June 17, 1579, Captain Francis Drake sailed his ship, Golden Hinde, into the gulf of the Farallones and the bay that now bears his name. He sighted the white cliffs and named the land Nova Albion

Speaking of genealogy, I am related to Cap'n Drake, though not a descendant, as he had no chilluns. Just thought I'd say. Strangely enough, the opportunity doesn't come up that often.
