President Bush will call on Wednesday for landing an unmanned spacecraft on the moon this decade to lay the groundwork for humans to return to the lunar surface and eventually visit Mars, administration officials said.

I have no problem with space exploration, but for the money we would spend sending a manned mission to Mars, we could invade and conquer 5 or 6 medium-sized countries.

Yes, but Mars and the moon will make for such great launching pads! Besides, they'll also be great places to set up factories for our "guest alien workers," in which case "alien" might be of the sci-fi variety.

Not to mention the killer contracts for Halliburton to supply the moon with imported rocks and dust from the earth (since moon rocks will be in "temporary short supply").

take care of the unwanted, abused, neglected children

buy up all the virgin land in this country that the giant corporations and real estate companies are salivating over with plans to destroy it, and turn it into protected park land and maintain them in perpetuity

invest in alternate fuels to run the country, to rid ourselves of fossil fuels 100%

ahahaha. i agree, sir. i was talking to my friend about this, and while she said it was important just in case we're going to.. you know, exodus-ize to Mars or wherever. The only reason we would is for lack of resources... and mars is just soo much better than Earth in that, RIGHT? AM I RIGHT OWR WHTATHA!??!?!/1

As far as I can tell, rocket fuel (http://users.commkey.net/Braeunig/space/propel1.htm) is not oil-based, so there goes that theory.

But I'm guessing GWB is working closely with Ford to make a 2MPG moon SUV, so that after everyone is settled there, they'll have to visit the pumps really often.

Hey, some of great daily-usage technologies come from the space race of the 60s and 70s. It might be a great way to help the economies of several countries and also improve relations with some of our American and European neighbors. Of course, I'm sure our gov't will find a way to screw this up and ostracize our allies but all in all I look forward to this kind of stuff; however, I am a complete sci-fi techno-geek.

Besides, we have lots of money so not to worry ... We'll still find the time and resources to invade a few more countries down the road. I'm pretty sure the guy in office has a check-list he is working from and you know how those Bush men like to keep their promises :)

Velcro was nice but I find the medical equipment developed as a result of that period far more significant. Medical Imaging is pretty helpful in diagnosing a host of problems that before would go undetected. Modern firefighting equipment, joysticks that are used to "pilot" wheelchairs, even the modern plastics we use for a whole myriad of things from syringes to bottled water ... all are a result of our "space race" of the 60s and 70s. As a diabetic, I could not have the current level of control over my diabetes were it not for the technology developed because of that initiative. :) In fact, I probably wouldn't be alive let alone able to walk had not they invented the MRI.

I can't get too excited about anything Dubya spouts off about. I think "fear" is more what I feel. Anyway, if he's re-elected, he'll either forget about the space thing or else undermine it some way. It's all about Dubya promoting Dubya. I hope we survive the Republicans and the Dubya Jihad.

Oh, certainly! And I think the latest space initiative will develop far more new technologies.

I was just being silly. I am a techno-geek and I definitely think our return to higher space ideals is long overdue, and I would really like to see NASA get a kick in the ass. So I wholeheartedly support this initiative, regardless of whether or not it's a cheap reelection ploy.

We should start with Saudi Ariabi, the home of THE worst human rights abouses ever known, then move on up to Syria (can you Kadhafi), then maybe move down to the Sudan (where they hack peoples limbs off for political reasons), then...
