The gmail phenomenom
Jun. 21st, 2004 09:50 amSo what is the deal with gmail? Why is everyone so excited about it? Is it because you have to get an invite from someone--does that create a "buzz" about it?
Really all I know about it is that it is a google thing that allows them to track your email trends by keywords, and that there is a lot of storage space. What's so special about that?
And I'm not trying to be cool or elitist or anything--I just don't get what it is about.

Date: 2004-06-21 10:11 am (UTC)--It holds a huge amount of e-mail. You don't have to worry about it running out of space.
--Unlike other free services like Yahoo! or Hotmail, there is no advertising cluttering up the page.
--"gmail.com" sounds and looks a bit more dignified than "yahoo.com" or "hotmail.com."
--Like other free web-based e-mail services, you can access it from any computer, anywhere, probably almost anytime that you have an Internet connection.
--All e-mail services do, in a way, already read your e-mail, in that they scan it for viruses. gMail automatically scans messages for keywords and they may or may not use the finding of some keywords for e-mailing advertising to you.
