Somewhere in the last week or two I decided to emerge from the 70s and explore the concept of digital music. I'nm not sure where this urge came from, but it has taken hold of me in a big way--the money spending way.

I have often felt a sense of bewilderment whenever someone posts one of those "list the first fifteen random mp3's that pop up on your ipod" things. I have no mp3's. And even if I did, I have no way to play them or convey them from here to there.

So now I want to know about it--what do I need to do to carry 5000 songs around with me?

iPod is only compatable with iTunes, so you need to download iTunes first. Go here (http://www.apple.com/itunes/).

-You have a laptop/computer with a cd rom drive.
-Do you have enough storage space for say, at least 20gb of music? That would be about 5000 mp3 or .aac files. If your laptop can't handle that, you can get an external hard drive.
-Buy the ipod 20gb player. If you think you'll want 10,000 songs eventually, get the 40gb. It will come with iTunes, which also is a program that will rip your existing cd collection onto your hard drive in the fashion you choose (you can establish the sound quality up to 160 bps, I think...

Since I have an ipod, I can show you the device how it works on my windows box sometime.

that would be good--you seem to have a grasp of this stuff.

Do you like your ipod?

Do I like my ipod?!? Do I like my ipod!!? Hell, no! I love my ipod! It goes with me everywhere. I jog with it, I broadcast it to my fm radio in the commute to work, I play it at home. I take it to my drum teacher when I want to learn some drum beats from a song I heard.

It's quite wonderful.

If you download iTunes, it's pretty easy to import music from your cds. You can put a CD in, then select "Get CD track names" and it will automatically search the Internet for the titles to the songs. Then you use "Import" to turn the songs from the CDs into mp3 or aac files.

That works really nicely for me, because iTunes automatically sorts them into folders. So if I import "Free Man in Paris," iTunes saves it in the folder "Court and Spark" which is in the folder "Joni Mitchell," which is in the folder "iTunes music."

Then you hook it up to an iPod and put it all on there. Then you can take 5000 songs with you to church.

have us suggest some playlists for you when you are ready mike- sharing music with friends is almost as precious as sharing hugs or food.
I'm excited for you- it's such nice way to experience new music with out the strain of expense if you decide you don't care for it.

Yeah, but that's what I love. At a record store, I can blow twenty dollars in one minute just by picking up more than one cd. On iTunes, I browse and browse and pick songs and feel like I've done a ton of shopping, and find out I've done a total of eight dollars. It's sweet.

Oh, and we should clarify for the Ploddite among us--you can use iTunes without using the iTunes store. It's an optional easy way to get music.

Remember, iPod isn't the only product, either. There are clones from iRiver, Philips, Samsung, Rio, Dell, Creative, and RCA. I just got the Dell DJ and have been playing with it for 2 days. So far so good. The 15gb model refurbished was $152, quite a bit cheaper than iPods, even after their recent price reduction.

hooray.

i adore my ipod. just like i bought a dell and then sold it six weeks later to get a mac... i got given (sorry for that terrible grammar) an iRiver and i sold it to get an ipod. it is beautiful and functional and sounds amazing and is always around. i wear it to work and at lunch and lots of other times. i have not yet bought any songs off of the music store, i have only ripped the cds that i and my roommates have. and (useful for you) when i went overseas i could store all my digital pics on it when i had no place to download them off of my camera and needed to clear them out.

i realized two things, too, as i got into the lifestyle - i am an introvert and my ipod helps me to get a little introvert time even when i can't be alone.... and it helped to bring the constant sense of worship back into my life.

happy looking.

I like the idea of being able to dump my camera--that is something I really need.

I too am an introvert, and I understand exactly what you mean by needing introvert time. haha--explain it to my wife!

To answer your question (one way at least) about $300 :)

To answer the question that has inevitably followed ("Why are you posting in my journal?")...

When I visited [livejournal.com profile] ldygwynedd last year, she had nothing but great things to say about you. Still does. [livejournal.com profile] badsede has mentioned you in his journal a few times, and I recognized the name because of talking to Jean. Then you latest post to [livejournal.com profile] catholicism made me more interested... Jean and I talked about that particular post and she made the comment "([livejournal.com profile] myasma) seems to be able to cut through the crap so surely and purely" so I thought I might see for myself.

So consider yourself friended. I don't really comment much myself and post even less (Grad school has been kicking my butt); I'm harmless enough (at least harmless enough for Jean to put me up for a week!)... Just your everyday grad student, music minister, looking-forward-to-my-job-and-new-life-in-five-months, kid. Oh, and they call me "Hal." :-D
