It is looking less and less likely that I will be able to fly out Saturday, since my flight path cuts directly across the projected hurricane path (subject to change). I remain hopeful.

If I am unable to leave, I have volunteered to be redeployed to a new shelter for a week, if they need me, which they probably do. So I may have to postpone that shower for a few more days. :(

I don't want you to get the idea that I stink though. I have become very good at bathing at the little sink in our clinic. It really is a little sink (unlike the little franciscan church which is actually quite big), being located in a kindergarten room. There is a tiny little toilet too. awwwww! I have been using apple-scented kids soap, and I like how I smell.

Back to business, we are packing a deployment box with a little bit of everything we have collected over the past three weeks. It is amazing how much I have learned about this kind of nursing. I love the challenge of doing something completely different.

One of my friends who works with FEMA called and told me that they are being pulled out of baton rouge. It's hard to tell what that means--FEMA is bound to go way overboard this time.

There is a kind of palpable tension that seems to grow as the storm gets closer. We are pretty far from the center of the storm, so I can only imagine what it is like for my friends in Texas. Our tension was relieved by two little sisters who spent the morning in the clinic drawing pictures for us and asking millions of questions. I have at least a half-dozen little letters addressed "To Moke".

I watched a little of the news last night--first time in three weeks. I can't believe how they sensationalize all this. My advice is to turn off the tv.

More later, I suppose.

I think I mentioned in an earlier comment that the only newscasters I trust to tell the truth about New Orleans at this point are Anderson Cooper (CNN) and Keith Olbermann (MSNBC). Both have been downright angry about what they've seen and have reported with similar ferocity.

You remain an inspiration. Honestly, I'm not sure how you're able to do it and continue to do it. Seems like I would have collasped by now into a little heap on the floor.

Mike I am thinking of you and what you are doing and I want to jump in my car and come help too but I know that is NOT plausible. I am proud of you and glad to be your lj friend.

I had to quit watching the news after Katrina hit, it was too horrible what was happening to the people, unimaginable to me. I cried my heart out seeing the devastation and misery the people were going through.

Stay safe please..you are in my prayers.

I know you won't get into sorting this all out until much later. But I am curious about what you find sensationalized. As a news consumer, it is hard to tell what is what.
Lake Charles seems to be on the edge of the hit list. That's where I used to live. It seemed to me to be all canals and bayou, river to sea and back again, all the way to Houston. I wonder where you will go.
When it is time to go home, buy lots of andouille and boudain.
Travel safely, Moke, er Mike. :)

I'll think good thoughts for smooth travelling for you. Regardless of what happens, I'm confident you'll come out smelling like...an apple.
