My first regular job was delivering the San Francisco Chronicle before school every morning.

I had about 40 customers, and it took me about an hour to deliver all the papers. I had to get up at about 5 am to get it done--earlier if it was raining.

I was pretty good. I could throw the paper so that it landed right at the foot of the door, but without actually hitting the door and waking up the customer. I took pride in that.

I loved riding around the deserted streets every morning. It was my best thinking time.

I used my paper route money to buy my first pig.

Not really--I probably spent it on dope or something.

Would you be my paper boy?
(she said as she grabbed the paper out of the rose bush this evening)

You're funny.

The pig makes the picture!

I had a local paper route, too. One day one of my customers said very enthusiastically to my mother, "Oh, she's wonderful! You can set your clock by her!" This was, to say the least, not the truth. I did always make sure the papers were delivered by 7:00 and that any misthrows were retrieved, though. Apparently my predecessor had been a bit, shall we say, erratic?

It looks like a bunny.

Do you still have those throwing skills?

Yeah, razzlefrazzlin' kids and their music and dope.

It was pretty boring without the pig.

I was always a conscientious paperboy, but that was about all you could count on me for back then.

my brothers, sister and i covered our whole suburb! stepfather would drop pre-counted bundles at various locations, and we would collect them and distribute on foot and bike.
once my sister got busted for dumping her quota. hahaaa!! there was weeks worth, all piled up in one place. LOL!
