Today is my yearly evaluation for the diaconate program, and the point where I learn if I get to continue with the final year. I'm not too worried, since I already have a room assignment for next weekend when we start again.

Both Arlina and I get interviewed--together and separately. One year, Arlina came out laughing--I'm pretty sure it was about me, but she never told. I expect that this year is going to be a little different, given our current circumstances.

More later.

Hear that?

What is the sound of a toaster rusting away in a wheat field?

The evaluation went well. I am invited to return for the final year, if I choose to do so.

It was an intensely spiritual experience. The director of the program, a Dominican Sister, has a way of seeing into my soul, and knowing almost exactly where I am in my journey. This used to make me uncomfortable, probably because she knew me better than I knew myself. Now, though, I find it reassuring--a touchstone.

So Arlina and I will continue the journey for the present, walking the path that is laid out before us. It feels good to be taking steps, even if to an unknown future.
