October 4--The girl from Ipanema
Oct. 4th, 2020 05:47 amI woke up at about 4 am this morning. I wake up early pretty much all the time now. I go to bed early too--almost always before 9. Somewhere along the line I turned into an old man. I sleep really well, though.
Once I have my coffee, I like to go outside to the front patio and see what stars I can see. With all the smoke lately, it's been hit and miss. There have been a few really bad days where I couldn't even see Venus and Mars, but they were both visible this morning, along with Orion's Belt, Castor & Pollux, Capella, and some others. The moon was in the west, near Mars. I have missed going out to do star photography this year. Maybe in the spring.
I went to the hospital this week to visit my students and set up their preceptorships. It's my first time back in a long time. Not much has changed except that everyone is wearing masks, and they check your temperature at the door. It was good to see all the people I haven't seen in a while. And my students--I only saw them in person once, briefly, back at the beginning of the semester. They look different in person than on a Zoom screen.
My clinical adjunct did most of the work finding preceptors for our students. He is one of my former students, who is teaching for the first time. He has done an excellent job, and seems to be a natural. Hopefully he will do it again for me next semester.

We took a drive down to San Francisco last weekend and walked around Crissy Field, near the bridge. It's one of our favorite spots. Those of you who remember Judy Watt will also remember that this was one of her favorite spots, and I always think of her when I am down there.
Later, we drove over the bridge to Marin, and out to Point Reyes, where we had some lunch at the Station Cafe. It's the first time we have eaten in a restaurant since March. They have a lovely outdoor patio, and have set up a really good system for keeping people safe while dining.

We split a beet salad and an order of fish and chips. Years ago, I used to drive my grandmother out here so she could have their fish and chips, which she loved.
It was a nice day, and good to be out a bit after being cooped up for so long.
