I was in Munich for a few days when they were preparing for the ill-fated summer Olympics, 1972. While there, I went to Dachau. "No words" is right.

Had my Great Uncle lived, he would have been a part of the 45th, who came upon Dachau and liberated it. I can't imagine the emotions of discovering such a horrible place and feeling it 70 years later.

I visited Dachau in 1983, on my first trip to Europe. I remember mostly the Linden trees just outside, my friend (who I was staying with) crying, and us going to the Hofbrauhaus that night and getting very drunk to get past it.

On the way into the camp I stopped by a stream overhung with trees and wondered at such a beautiful spot so close to something so horrible. It didn't seem to make sense.
