Another great day. We got up late again and had an easy breakfast before heading out to the military museum and Napoleon's final resting place. We walked for miles and miles today, and I am so tired! Way too tired to edit pictures.

armor face

the military museum was interesting. We only got through half of it. We may go back to see the indochina exhibit. We started out in the armor wing. There are rooms and rooms of armor. Armor of kings and armor of knights. Even armor for little kids. It was interesting to see how armor and armaments evolved over 300 years before the advent of modern warfare. After the armor rooms, we walked through the WW1 and WW2 exhibits.

After the museum we came home and had lunch and a nice nap. One of the things I like about this trip is that we are taking time to relax. Makes all the difference. We picked up some more food from Rue Cler for lunch. The highlight was Malida finding a place that sells papaya salad. If she were Popeye, papaya salad would be her spinach.

We ventured out again at around 4:30, on our way to the Arc de Triomphe. I had figured out how to take the metro there, but when we went out it was a lovely afternoon, so we decided to walk. As we were crossing the bridge over the Seine, the sun was just beginning to set, and we stopped to watch.

sunset

It turned out to be one of those almost perfect moments. We stayed there for almost a half hour watching the colors change. This is a shot from my iPhone. Usually my regular camera shots are better, but nothing beat this one.

We headed to the Arc de Triomphe, and walked up the 300 or so stairs to get to the top. It was another nice view. that darn tower just seems to want to get in all my shots.

After we got home, we went out for another nice dinner at the italian place next to our building. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so we plan to spend the day in the Louvre.

It's amazing how much walking you can do in Paris, huh?

In the last picture here of the tower .. the cars look a bit like ants! lol!

It is, but it is a very walking-friendly city. So much to see, and when you get tired, a little cafe waiting for you at the next corner.

Beautiful shots. I can't decide which I like better.

I like the first tower one, probably because it was such a magical moment for us.

Beautiful

Your pictures are gorgeous. It sounds like you're having a lovely time. I'm quite jealous. I hope to get to Paris one day soon myself. For now I'll live vicariously through you and your photos!

We are having a wonderful time--probably one of the best trips I have ever taken. We were talking about why that was last night, and we think it is because we are taking time to relax along the way and not trying to jam too much in like usual.

I hope you get to see Paris one day!

We loved Paris when we were there. The Tower keeps showing up in your pictures because it's just remarkably beautiful from all angles. Will you climb it this trip?

We really enjoyed the Musee d'Armee. My favorite item was in the WWI exhibit, in a display of crafts soldiers did int the trenches. It was a little tiny plane made out of a bullet and cartridge (presumably with the powder removed!). [livejournal.com profile] smplmn said he wanted to take the WWI tank for his daily commute.

We climbed it the other night, and spent more than an hour (and a small bottle of wine) just taking it all in.

I saw those in the museum! Some really clever stuff. I guess they had a lot of time on their hands sitting in those trenches.

The sunset shot is gorgeous. Sometimes mini cameras really deliver.

I cannot imagine armor for a child. That troubles me.

They have some that small in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. They probably have some at the Met. Keep in mind that people were shorter then. What looks like a child's armor to us may be for a teen -- at 13 and 14, boys acted as squires. It's still uncomfortable to think about, but at that time, a boy of that age was considered to be an adult.

That actually makes me feel a lot better. I can handle the idea of a 13 or 14 year old being considered an adult in those times. But I was thinking an 8 year old being placed in armor and sent onto the battlefield to fight alongside men in their late teens.

Some of the little armor was made for the future kings and princes, who would have been trained from when they were small--a part of culture of their times.

The sun like a glowing golden egg in that sunset shot, and the clouds just humming with color--it's a gorgeous photo. And I like the face in the first picture--it seems much more particularistic and human than I would have imagined an armor face would be. Not generic: more like a portrait.

Your pictures are gorgeous all by themselves, but I enjoy them with your commentary where I can imagine your footsteps and it all feels more real. Thanks for shAring!
