I've had the flu for the past 5 days, even though I got my flu shot and it isn't flu season. Lucky me. I got sick at work Friday and had to come home. Pretty much slept for the next few days. Malida was a good nurse to me. She made me soup and gave me tepid baths. After 3+ days of fevers and progressive shortness of breath, I finally went to the doctor yesterday. Apparently the flu triggered some sort of restrictive airway disease. My oxygen level was low and I was pretty wheezy. She gave me a breathing treatment and sent me home with steroids and an inhaler.

I feel a lot better today--it's nice to be able to breathe. It's amazing how much better I can breathe after using the inhaler. I think I've been having trouble for a while. And my fevers are gone, so I feel like myself again.

Just in time to report to jury duty tomorrow. I have been "on call" the past two days, which was good, because there was no way I could go in, but I didn't want to postpone, because I don't want to be called again this year. But I have to go in tomorrow. I will go, and tell them I am sick, and they will excuse me. What can go wrong?

Nothing else to say about the last 5 days other than I watched a bunch of bad movies, and a very interesting documentary about the Cowsills. You might recall them from the late 60s-early 70's. They were the group that the Partridge Family tv series was based on. A bunch of enormously talented kids who were destroyed by a domineering father. Anyway, the youngest of them, Susan Cowsill, has continued to make music, and she is really really good.

Ok, I'm off to convalesce.

Yikes--too bad about the flu, and worse that it led to restricted airways. I hope you feel better, and that they don't make you stay for jury duty.

Keep breathing for as long as possible, okay?

Wow, breathing problems are scary - especially when you realize you've probably been compensating unknowingly for a while.

The Cowsills! I still have a couple of their 45s. I knew a bit about them and the tragedies among the siblings. I knew Susan was still working and I think John also.

I'm happy to hear that you are on the mend. Breathing issues are scary. having a rescue inhaler will be good to have on hand in the future.
Take care!

Susan Dey who played in the Partridge family tv series grandmother lived near my grandmother in Mountainville, NY. As a kid I thought that was great and was hoping I would see her if she was visiting her grandmother while I was visiting mine.

I hope the jury duty is sensible and that it is restful enough for more recuperation.

Goodness, so sorry to hear you have been ill. I hope your recovery continues to go well and you're feeling back to yourself in the time.

I also had flu late in the season (early May) which sounds insane until I read on the CDC website that there was a new outbreak of Type B flu just around then. My dad went to the hospital with breathing problems and a day and a half after he was admitted (after I'd visited him twice, for several hours each time) they informed him that he had Type B flu. Gown and mask precaution? Too late.

I also always, always get the flu shot, and haven't had it in years. My doctor said the fact that I did get the shot, plus the Tamiflu I took as soon as it seemed like flu, probably lessened the symptoms and shortened the period I was sick. Still, ugh.

My friends at work were telling me that there has been all sorts of influenza B cases in May and June. Interesting.

I think they do concerts as the Cowsills periodically. Susan is playing at a barbecue thing in Novato in a few weeks, and I think I'm going to go down and take a listen.

I'm one of those people who don't mind jury duty, or even sitting around all day to see if I'll be picked. It is welcome downtime without much distractions.

My friends at work were telling me the same thing. I think this is the flu I had. That's what my doctor indicated.

(a) Having the flu is the only time I've thought I might need to die to feel better.

(b) I don't know much about Susan Cowsill, but I listen to quite a bit of a New Orleans folk singer named Paul Sanchez (see user photo). He and Susan do shows together from time to time.
