backstar

Something happened on the day he died
Spirit rose a meter and stepped aside
Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried
I'm a blackstar, I'm a blackstar

Im always amazed the quiet way I grieve for musicians who influenced me or comedians that made me laugh. Like a hole appeared in the Universe. Yet I am constantly amazed at who comes along next. Never the same. You can't be the same. A hole appears and some one comes along.

Bowie's death affected me much more than I would have expected. I've been listening to his music since I was a teenager, and would always listen to what he was putting out, but I don't think I would have ever described him as one of my favorite artists.

I bought his new album Friday, and listened to it with some friends. I thought it was the best stuff he had done in a while.

When I heard he died last night, it was so shocking, and it hit me really hard. The only other thing I can compare it to (leaving out the deaths of people I know which is a different beast altogether) was the death of John Lennon.

I guess sometimes artists' influences on us are subtle, and we never really know how deeply their music is woven into the fabric of our lives.

But yes, now there's a hole, and maybe someone completely unexpected will come along and fill it.

The radio station I listen to spent the whole day playing Bowie: either his songs, covers, or songs that related to or influenced him. I think they could do that for three days straight without having to strain.

Yeah I was listening to the satellite radio station today and the woman who plays at midday wove together a lovely tribute.

I was surprised by how affected i was, considering that i didn't go out of my way to listen to his work -- but the hole that appeared was large.

I'm not sure i can appreciate all of Blackstar, but the title track did click with me.

Lazarus is the other track off that album that hit me. Check out the video.

Yeah, I don't think I would have ever put him on my favorite artist list, and yet, when I went back through my weekly playlists for the past few years he showed up a lot, and he was one of very few artist that I still bought the entire album. So maybe he was more important to me than I knew.

I don't own any Bowie records and I was never a huge fan - but when I had insomnia the other night and went online at 2 AM and saw the headline, I started to cry. Like you, I was totally shocked and it hit me hard.

I am glad that he was in control of the lack of publicity up until he passed - can you imagine the ghoulish buzzards of the tabloids circling if they had known? He went with dignity.

My friends and I were talking about that this evening--how he was able to go out with such grace. What a blessing.
