March 12--rain come down
Mar. 12th, 2016 09:09 pmAs promised, I didn't do too much today. I did start the laundry, but didn't fold it yet. That can wait until tomorrow. I talked with one of my fellow doctoral students on the phone for a while. Her son was kind enough to proofread one of my papers and make some welcome suggestions. Her was there to see her presentation this week, and I got to meet him.
I went out walking by the creek before the rain started. My app told me I had at least 50 minutes, but I only really had 30, but I was on my way back by then. The creek is as full as I have seen it. Maybe even more full than the last time I said that a month or so ago. Good to see.
I did some shopping. I like grocery shopping, but more during the week when the aisles aren't so full. I bought a pork roast to cook tomorrow with some apples and potatoes. It will rain all day, so will be a good day to cook. I might even make some bread.
This evening I met my friends in Second Life and we played music for each other and talked. I played an hour's worth of music I found on the NPR Tiny Desk Concert site. I love the Tiny Desk Concerts.
I've already set the clocks forward. I am surprised by how few clocks we have. I used to love setting the clock forward when I worked nights. We would get paid for the full shift, but work an hour less. Of course we paid for it in the fall when we had to work an extra hour. Now it only means that it will be an hour later when I decide to get up.
I have the window open so I can feel the breeze and hear the rain gently falling.

Date: 2016-03-13 07:09 pm (UTC)I returned toward the end of my master's degree about 4 years ago, because I needed some distraction. I fell in with a handful of people who love music and have a place there called The Attic. So we meet up a few times a week and play sets for each other and talk about stuff. It's become part of my weekly routine.
I like building houses there too, but haven't really done much of that since I started the doctoral program.

Date: 2016-03-13 12:41 pm (UTC)Anyway, The first wee or so was spent in port in Okinawa. I was very impressed by how much activity the fitbit was reporting. I'd walked 4,5,6 miles a day. depending. And it sure as hell felt like it! Back when I'd graduated from the University I so wisely majored in "Sociology", The only job I could land was a third-shift security guard at Rhode Island Hospital. I'm sure you know this. Way back then, when I was still a "watchman", I bought an analogue "pedometer" and it consistently told me I was walking between 7 or 8 miles a night. Though that ship was much smaller than the campus of RIH, I was proud of how much activity I was getting. I mean, I WAS running all over, up and down ladderwells and stuff, all day. Then.
THEN, we got underway. And my activity definitely dropped. I was standing a close bridge watch on a High Speed Vessel. When you are traveling close to 30 Kts, it would be really imprudent to ignore hours of watch planted in your seat on the bridge, binoculars in hand. With an Aluminum hull with a thickness of 50 Mils, a simple bouy could sink the whole show! Anyway, that boat would take on a whole lot of water through the MES (Massive Evacuation System) hatches. And about three days in, my fitbit told me I'd walked something like 24 miles that day. I was puzzled and incredulous, until I realized how much I'd been swabbing! Each half-swab was being counted as a step. Or something.
Anyway. I lost the damn thing somewhere. Maybe I gave it to my niece. I don't know. I miss the buzz-alarm, but lost all desire to keep tract of "how much" exercise I get.
I gain about 10 pounds while I'm on leave, and then lose it back when I start working again.
Yeah, I have a gut. I got the sugah, but I'm kicking, and have no plans to stop any time soon.
