I somehow got roped into being the co-planner for my director's retirement party coming up in May. I think it is because I have known her longer than anyone there, as she was my psych teacher way back when. I'm happy to do it for her, but not the party-planning type.

We had to go over to the cultural center to reserve a room they have that is good for small gatherings. The last time I was there was about 11 years ago, on a photo assignment for the school newspaper, when I was a photography student. At the time, the woman who ran the place kicked me out, even though I had every right to cover the event. She didn't want the event photographed, even though it was a public event on a college campus. Free speech, etc.

She's still there, and the person we needed to talk to about the room. I reminded her that we met once before when I was there to take pictures and she greeted me like a long-lost cousin.

I had a couple big assignments due yesterday and today, and finally got them done. They are not really assignments, even though they are graded and due. They are pieces of our project that need to be done in order for us to be able to move forward. That realization makes it much more interesting to me.

I took a break this afternoon and went for a walk in the park. It was a perfect afternoon, and I easily completed all my steps for the day. I am averaging about 12,000 steps a day now. It feels good, though I am still as short and wide as when I didn't walk at all. But I don't get short of breath anymore, so I count that as a big plus.

barbie in the path

Yes, I know this isn't a Barbie, but it is kind of a barbie with a small b. When I saw it in the middle of the walking path, I was reminded of the old saying, "If you see Buddha in the road, run him over," and was reminded of an old friend, Fernando, who first cryptically told me that saying years ago as we were driving along a deserted road in the dark.

No wonder she fell over. Those tiny feet and twiggy legs are entirely inadequate to the task of supporting the weight of that giant head and all that hair.

I first approached it from the hair side and thought it was a small wig someone lost.

Must be Barbie's trashy sister.

That's a strange doll. Your friend's words were very odd.

You'll do fine planning a party. I'm sure you can recruit some help in the planning. is there money for catering or will it be a pot luck?

the song that came to mind was, "deep and wide, deep and wide, there's a fountain flowing deep and wide" ; ) I need to get a step counter; I've walked every day (mostly) for the past 3.5 weeks, and it's only a little bit easier. I need some encouragement, and counting steps would be that.

I have found this step counter/sleep analyzer very helpful in reshaping my habits. It surprised me.

So what did you do with the Barbie? There's a woman in Australia who makes over not Barbies but like Bratz dolls to be more like the children who play with them: Tree Change Dolls.

On the other hand, sometimes kids want to play with the fantastical, lace-stocking-legged, pink-haired daydream doll.

I left the doll there in case someone came back for it. I like what that woman does with the Bratz dolls. Makes them look real.
