As horrifying as yet another mass shooting is, I am even more discouraged by the loss of dialogue about the problems we face. It seems as if we choose the narrative that fits our worldview, and fuck any kind of rational discussion.

I think this has been true for awhile. I was reading about Jeannette Rankin, the first Congresswoman, who voted against declaring war on Japan. She was hounded by the press, snd abandoned any hope of re-election. In my own era, I think of the lack of nuance on both sides when discussing Vietnam. I think these strident vouces may be part of the process of change. But my theory does not expkain Trump.

I know the feeling. That sort of behavior is just human nature in a way, but I think the Internet has made things far worse. It's ridiculously easy to be an anonymous online bully nowadays, and there will always be people in this world who find that sort of thing to be empowering ... :/

Yup. I don't even want to read positions I agree with, because all the blahblahblah is just so much hot air. Speaking of which, mass murder by gun is barely worth mentioning compared to what's about to happen due to climate change. That's a much tougher topic.

I am so exhausted by all the news - the anger, the politics, the polarization. Right now it feels very much like 1968 but with less class and worse music.
