I had an early morning phone conference with my doctoral advisor about my project proposal. I had a revision due yesterday, but kind of ran into a wall and decided that I needed to completely rewrite it rather than revise it. She agreed and gave me some direction.

Interestingly, in the midst of my failed revision, I found a newly published article that summarizes all the literature about diabetes in the Hmong population, and pretty much lays out what I am looking at. I found it very helpful, and sent an email to the author, who is a nursing professor at Chico State, about an hour north of here. I will talk to her later this week, and may gain some additional insight into this project.

After all this, I decided I needed to clear my head and drove out to the Cosumnes River Preserve to hike around.

trestle

One of my favorite spots. I have come hiking out here for close to 25 years. I have always found peace.

green spider

a green spider I saw along the way.

There was a television program a while back about the aboriginal population up north who returned to their native diet of salmon, and a bunch of other things. They all lost weight, and their diabetes dropped off dramatically. I gather their bodies just did so much better when they went back to their cultural diet. It was really an interesting program.

Funny how all these "modern" foods and conveniences are supposed to make life "better" but rarely seem to.

Spider picture is awesome. I am also hankering for the woods.

Yeah the Western diet is implicated in my study.

Wow, I've never seen a green spider before. Great capture1 now I will look it up to find out more.

I miss walking in the woods. I need to go up on the parkway.

I didn't realize it was green until I looked at the picture and was able to focus in. The spider was pretty small.

Diabetes among the Hmong? Thais put sugar into almost all their food, I wonder if that's also a Hmong thing. In Chiang Rai, which is mostly where I saw them, they mostly looked under-weight, but that may be because it's a long walk into town from their hill villages. They probably don't walk that much here. When you're done & published, I'd like to read the dissertation.

As usual, stunning photos!

That's the thing--it was almost unknown among the Hmong in Southeast Asia, but has become a big problem here. They are not out farming all day, and eating a different diet.

The spider is fabulous!

How do you pronounce "Cosumnes"?

It is like "Consume", but without the N, and add an "ess"
