I already made this entry, but an errant thumb pad on my macbook air track pad made it go away. Now I know why my cursor keeps jumping all over the place. As I was saying...

We slept in this morning. I like not having to get up early on a vacation. Setting an alarm to go sightseeing or something just seems wrong. Anyway we got up about 9 and had some coffee. Our plan for the day was go to to Jamestown, have some breakfast, and then visit the rail museum.

We made it as far as breakfast. It was in the mid 90s by 11 am, and after breakfast we decided to duck into an old book store for a while. We ended up spending an hour there, and buying a lot of old books. I talked with the guy who owned the place and he told me he would probably be closing it down next year because "no one buys books anymore". What a loss.

After the bookstore we wandered through the many antique shops that line the main street, mostly because they were cool and dark. I bought a small wooden cat, and Malida bought some little things she can take back to Thailand.

Malida said she wished she had some ice cream, and about 10 seconds later we were standing in front of an ice cream place. It was nice and cool in there too. She had an ice cream and I had a double espresso.

It didn't get any cooler, and by the time we drove up to the rail museum, it was about 104, so we decided to save it for another day and headed back to the motel, where we sat out by the pool and relaxed. That's the place to be when it is 104 out.

In the evening we drove back to Jamestown and had dinner, then came home and took a walk down to the state historic park down the street as the sun set. We pretty much had the place to ourselves. It was kind of cool walking through a closed-up old town.

We head home tomorrow, and then back to work. It has been a lovely little trip.

Too bad about that used bookstore, I love those places. For a while, it looked like all such places would depart. I know in 2015, though, that I read of an American booksellers study that in the US used bookstores are again a growing population.
That knowledge doesn't help, though, when a good one fails.
I prefer the current climate with the internet to the old days of being unable to find lots of books, but I still hate to see cool stores fail.

The thing that's great about hot weather is the way it gives one a chance to avoid crowds in parks

I have a kindle, and love it. I like the idea of being able to carry multiple books around with me. But I also like the feel of a real book in my hands, and having real books sitting on my shelves. In my ideal world, you would go to a bookstore and buy a physical book, and get the electronic version too. I realize my ideal world is impractical.

Sad about the bookstore. We went through a little town with a bunch of antique stores and other business of that ilk, many of them closed. People's leisure time is used so differently now.

I am always so sad to see a Book Store close. I always figured that I would learn something from every book I read. Not that some of them I would rate above pure drivel. Some books are just life changing.
I love the Eskimo Pie sign

I love looking through these old book stores and seeing books I already have--maybe that I bought, or that were given to me by my grandfather. And then finding books I don't have that will go with them.

We spend the night in Jamestown every January for Ky's birthday. He's been doing it for ... like ... 30 years or something. He has another trainiac friend who shares his birthday and the two of them commit to dinner at the Jamestown Inn every year. I've been included in the last seven.
Too bad you didn't make Railtown, photo ops galore! Find another time in the fall, when it's cooler.

I remember you writing about being up there before, and how there is a connection between the Sacramento Rail Museum and Jamestown.

I first went up there in the early 90s. My first wife and I celebrated our second anniversary at the Jamestown Hotel. It was pretty cool. We went to the rail museum, and took the train ride out into the country. The next day we went to Columbia, and on the way back stopped at the airport and took a small plane ride around the area.

Malida loved it up there, so I am sure we will go back. We had dinner one night in old town Columbia, at the City Hotel, which was so good.
