What is interesting about Lawrence is the reason why he is the patron saint of cooks. He was a martyr, who (as legend has it) was put to death on a charcoal grill by the Roman Emperor Valerian. After having endured the grill for a period of time, he (according to legend)told the executioner, "Better turn me over, I'm done on this side".
