It felt like saturday as soon as I opened my eyes this morning. I'm not sure what it is--maybe it's the way the light streams in through the window, or the sounds of the neighborhood when I go out to retrieve the paper. Whatever it is, it just feels different.

I have only recently begun to appreciate the feel of a saturday morning. For almost as long as I have been working, I have had to work weekends. Not every weekend, but enough to blunt the significance of saturdays. Most of my days off came in the middle of the week, which was great--it's like having the world to yourself.

For a long time, I worked every friday night. Saturday was the day that I had to try and sleep over the sound of lawn mowers, and kids running through the neighborhood. And the light--like I say, it's just different on saturdays.

But now I have a monday-friday job, and every weekend off. It has taken time to get used to. I miss my weekdays. I hate competing with the rest of humanity at the grocery store. But I'm adjusting.

I had to learn early on that saturday mornings were meant to be kept free of obligations. Saturday mornings are for sleeping in and having fun. I have begun to do my baking on saturday morning. My wife teaches catechism on saturdays, so I have the house to myself. I can crank up the music and knead to my heart's content. Pretty soon I'll start working in the garden, and begin planting vegetables and such. When the weather is nice, I'll sit out in the back yard on saturday mornings, sipping coffee and playing my guitar. Saturday mornings are a gift, and are to be treasured.

I love Saturdays.
It is fun to make flowers beds in the spring. Pot up some house plants.

Ah, I had my first free Saturday in ages yesterday, very lovely.

I need to begin my garden, too, although I'm afraid that it's going to have to be on the porch this year.
