No particular order and not the top five, but just five great albums. They would definitely be in my top 100.

Jeff Buckley--Grace

Allman Brothers--Live at Fillmore East

Pretenders--Pretenders

Gillian Welch--Time (The Revelator)

Neil Young--Rust Never Sleeps

Live at the Fillmore East

Is the only album that I have consistently replaced throughout my life. I have owned a lot of music, but never that much at once. I went through two copies of Fillmore East on vinyl. I taped it and when that tape got eaten I actually went and bought it on cassette. I now have it on CD.

During the small window of time when I actually kind of cared about music, I thought that "Eat a Peach" was the better album. But I haven't had a copy of it for years.

I guess one of the reasons that I have always had to replace Live at the Fillmore East is because they never play the 33 minute version of "Whipping Post" on the radio. Nor do they play "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" on classic rock stations, and those aren't the kinds of songs you can go to a friend's house and say "mind if we listen to this?... can you please be quiet. Do you, by chance, have a joint you could spare?"

The boss won't listen. My kid isn't interested. I have it in my car. It's a solitary pleasure nowadays. All things considered it still is in pretty heavy rotation.

I still have my original vinyl copy and a more recent cd version, as well as the Dreams anthology. I have loads of albums that I have carted around with me all over the world, and this remains one of my favorites, particularly for the songs you mentioned. It really has a timeless quality, and yet perfectly captures a moment in time.

After I listed these five albums, I immediately thought of five more, but wanted time to savor these first.

my entire Allman Brothers Dreams set got stolen when my car got broken into.
I just don't feel right driving on a sunny day with the windows down without Southbound playing at high volume...;)
Good thing I just got the DSL and related music downloading capabilities:):):)

Ahh, it hurts to have music stolen.
Perhaps worse, though....
when my car got stolen a couple of years ago, they didn't steal my cd's. They broke them in half, apparently as an editorial comment on my taste in music. That hurt.

Cranberries

You are amazing--it is a Cranberries cd--the one I was listening to when I got my first ever email address. AOL kept rejecting the screen names I wanted to use, and I happened to glance down at the cd cover. I've been browncouch ever since. Still a great album too.

i was pretty positive that's what it was, but i didn't want to say 'your icon is a cranberries cd' because i really didn't want to be a wrong.

i love making up screennames. in addition to this one i have aBitOverzealous, applesauceInAcup, appeaseTHEgods, aspiring2beHuman...and about 10 others, but i'mma stop there.

and yes, it is a great album.
