I drive the freeway almost every day. A straight shot--18 miles north to "downtown"; 18 miles south to "home". Most of the time I do it in a semi-trance, except when I pass cows or goats in the few rural acres that haven't been paved over yet.

About two weeks ago I was driving along, and all of a sudden there was a kitchen sink flying across all four lanes of traffic. It was about 100 yards ahead of me. I was entranced for a second or two--you don't see a flying sink every day. A car in front of me hit it head-on, and the sink bounced off and landed on the shoulder. The driver lost control, and the car started weaving wildly across all four lanes, as if trying to outdo the sink. It all seemed to be happening in slow motion. The car finally stopped without hitting anything else, just as I caught up with it. I swerved and avoided it, and continued on.

Yesterday, while driving the same stretch of freeway, all of a sudden, there was a case of toilet paper flying across all four lanes of traffic. The car in front of me tried to avoid it and lost control, swerving across all four lanes, and nearly rolled over before coming to a stop. Another car hit the toilet paper head-on. It was spectacular--rolls flew off and unraveled in every direction. It was like white paper fireworks, only squeezably soft.

Where is all this stuff coming from?
