It looks like we will take a drive up to Oregon at the end of the month. We will drive up to Portland, stay a few days, then travel slowly down the coast. The Oregon coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and has always been special to us.

Our first trip together was to Oregon--pretty much the same trip we are planning now. We had been going out for about 6 months at the time after working together for a year. It was a great trip. We spent a couple days in Portland with one of Arlina's friends, and then drove down the coast. It was a combination of camping and hotels, depending on the weather and how stinky we were. We had our first big argument in Florence, at a t-shirt shop. This was where I learned that men and women shop differently. We made up out on the sand dunes.

We were having such a good time, we called back to work and told our boss we had eloped, and asked for another week off for a honeymoon. They never would believe anything I said, so we had to go back.
We found that we were well-suited to be traveling companions (other than t-shirt shops). We liked many of the same things, and both had a sense of adventure. We have always chosen the back roads over the highway.
The following year we took a trip down the California coast and stopped in at the Madonna Inn. When I made the reservation, they asked if it was our anniversary, and I said yes. It was the anniversary of the day we didn't really get married. We were greeted by a bottle of champagne in our room and a special dinner.
The year after that found us in southern California visiting my mom. We went to Knotts Berry Farm and celebrated a fake marriage in the little chapel there. They gave us wedding rings made of old nails. We still have them. We came home and told my mom we got married, but she didn't believe anything I said either.
Somewhere in there we decided to actually get married. It wasn't a "get down on your knees" thing--more like it just came up in conversation. The date we picked for our wedding was the same date we had been celebrating since our first trip together--October 2nd.
Every year since then we have tried to take a trip somewhere to celebrate our anniversary. Some years it is a big trip, others it is a short drive up into the hills. October is a great time to travel. All the kids are back in school, but the weather is usually still beautiful.
Last year, for the first time, we didn't go anywhere. We were too busy with our busy lives. We went out to dinner.
This year is our tenth anniversary. I wasn't sure we would be able to go anywhere because of Arlina's treatment schedule. I had been trying to plan something around it, but it kept changing. I ran into her oncologist one day and told her what I was trying to do. She told me that taking a trip together was much more important than treatment. She was emphatic about it. That was the day I cried a lot.
Arlina's friend called a few minutes ago--the one in Portland. She invited us to come up and stay with them for a few days. We haven't seen them since that first trip. Then it's on down the coast to enjoy the life we have been given.
This beautiful gift.
