That's me, June 1999.
Picture was taken in a Hubbart County Park on the Peninsula behind Woodside, San Mateo County.
The banana slug is the official mascot of UC Santa Cruz and is an essential part of redwood forest ecology.

Now that you mention that, I remember it. :) I must have blocked it out. Thank you, very much, for the links. :)

Yes, they do live in California. They are very benign. They are the mascot of UC Santa Cruz.

Blech. Bad enough the leopard ones we have. At least they look like tortoise shell before you accidentally step on them.

Of course, they're no geoducks.

Fabulous photo!!!

In the summer of 1997 I went to a scientific conference at UC Santa Cruz, but even though I bought my share of "banana slug" souvenirs, I never actually saw one of the little critters live.

Some fascinating facts about banana slugs, including their scandalous sex lives.

Is it as long as it looks?

I forgot to ask in my other comment. Size _is_ everything. I am so glad that it doesn't look like the new governator. I wonder if the absentee ballots will affect the count....

This slug is really cool! I've never seen one like that before. When I was a kid, there was a tree in the woods nearby that we called the slug tree, 'cause it was covered with hundreds. ewwwww! That can't be good.
