The water company folks came back this morning to look for the leak under our lawn. Unfortunately, it seems to be nowhere near the meter, meaning that they won't fix it.

I called a plumber. I had always heard that plumbers were expensive, and I knew they made more than nurses, but I wasn't sure how much more.

Now I know how much more. Much much more.

$47.50 for the first fifteen minutes, and $35 for every fifteen minutes thereafter.
Multiply that by, "I'm not sure where this thing is, I'm gonna have to do some serious digging."

Oh boy.

This is my worst fear as a home-owner come true: the mysterious problem that's simply not DIY-able.

Hoping for the best for you.

The joys of being a landowner!

I was always worried about the roof--I never even thought about pipes.

There are no problems that are not DIY-able. ;)

But then I do have a background in architecture and construction.

Do it yourself, maybe, but not do it myself.

Then again, I've got a crew of maintenance people who take care of the facilities (including my residence) here.

Any way possible for you to do the digging and save yourself a bit of $$$? When you find where it is, then all the plumber has to do is fix it.

Maybe?

A hint for the future, find the leak before the plumber gets there. Hiring a neighborhood kid to dig a trench is a lot cheaper than having the plumber do it.

I hope all goes OK.

I wish I had thought of that before he started digging.

Oh, dearie me. The joys indeed of home-owning. We're very DIY around here - mostly out of bullheadedness probably. Of course, anything is easy once you know how.

By the way, you're not a surgical nurse? I thought the big knife comes in just for the aneurysm. Anybody can open and close. bwa-ha But seriously folks...

Sorry about the whack to your wallet. So far, all of the water problems here have occurred on the out side of the meter. Knock wood, or pipe. The one time I had to have a plumber in (another time, another place) he worked incredibly fast. The fee wasn't as savage as I expected it to be.

Uh, yeah.. much more than nurses, unfortunately. (Maybe with the new nursing ratios going into effect...maybe, just maybe... that could change a little)
I've learned too much about plumbers the last few years. My mom and dad left me some rental property, and I've come to dread the winters, for that reason. (frozen pipes...arrrgh)
