I'm not usually the ranting type, at least on LJ (which is why I hardly ever use the "ranting hippo" icon). Or at least I don't think I am, but I feel the need....

Here's the deal. Arlina has her doctor and chemo appointment today. I usually go over for the doctor part, which I did, but the doctor was 1 1/2 hours late getting to her. I waited, but I missed my chance for lunch. These things happen.

After she saw the doctor, I took her paperwork down to the chemo people. They had no record of her appointment today. They started to toss the blame our way, but I wasn't buying any of it. It's the responsibility of the doctor's office to do that stuff. The end result was that they would do the chemo, but I had to hand-carry the orders to the pharmacy. That's why I was late for my meeting.

When I got to the meeting room, there were a bunch of people camped out in the room--family members of a "VIP" patient, and they were not to be disturbed. So I had to find an alternate room pronto.

This kind of stuff really irritates me. It's generally not the patients themselves who are irritating. It's the people attached to them, whose inflated sense of self-importance makes them think it is ok for them to insist on preferential treatment. In my view, every patient is deserving of the best care possible, and there is no such thing as preferential treatment.

When the meeting was over, my boss wanted to talk to me about my performance evaluation. End result--big huge raise, which made everything all better!

The End

1. As much as I like to bitch about patients, not having a clinic appointment is never the patient's fault. The most common culprit is some dumbass clerk who's too busy making personal phone calls, flirting with other staff members, and just generally not paying attention to what the hell s/he is supposed to be doing. Not that that ever happens [*cough*] where I work...

2. VIP's sometimes suck, sometimes are cool. However, their families almost always suck, because they try to win brownie points for themselves with the "big shot" by running the staff all around.

3. YAY! Go you with the big raise! Congratulations!

Congrats!

I always tell Nursing students to be aware of families. They can make you, or break you.

a big raise! YAY!!! congratulations!

VIP..... Very Inflated Pipsqueak!!!!
i agree. every person is important, no matter who they are or where they are from.

we have a student who is a minister in our state parliament. he is a really nice down to earth person. he's copped a lot of flack the past couple of years because he held a difficult portfolio (roads and transport which is a total mess, but hey, what isn't these days? lol)
if you didn't know who he was you would never guess. i feel so sorry for him sometimes. he comes in to the school as a student (just like anyone else) and other students abuse him for state government policy. he is always so gracious when that happens, always diffuses it with a joke....

i guess, those connected to fame or vip worry that if that person is no longer around, they will lose their vip by association. ew, phsychophants are almost always boorish and self inflated!

i'm so glad your yucky day had a great ending! xxx

Yay for big huge raise!!!

I'm right there with ya: everyone is a VIP patient. The quickest way to annoy me is to start name dropping and making a bunch of unreasonable demands "because I work here" or "because I'm related to so and so", etc.

Take Care,
Cat

I actually left a fairly decent doctor because his staff was so bad. They weren't very cheerful, sometimes quite inconsiderate, and not very helpful. I'm not a demanding patient. The doctor was okay, but I just didn't want to have to deal with them anymore.

That's damn right! A hospital is a hospital, and anyone in the hospital, whether they be a housewife or a president or a death row inmate, deserve the same care and treatment (not in medical terms, I mean in terms of effort. You can't give everyone gall bladder surgery...) Either way, a hospital is one place where all of the employees working to their full capacity really is a life or death issue. VIP patient bah.

Anyway, kudos!
