We were at the retreat center over the weekend for our penultimate session before ordination. The topics were marriage, death and celibacy--an interesting mix.

Christ the King

They sort of taught us how to marry people, or at least where to find what we need in the book. It's kind of exciting. I think that is the thing that people ask me the most about my ministry--if I will be able to marry people (I will). They really haven't given us much hands-on training in this sort of stuff though--I guess we learn it "on the job".

We also received our scores from the review panel. Pretty much everyone did ok, including me. My scores were better than I thought they should be, but what do I know. I'm just glad that hurdle is over.

After the retreat, we drove up to Corning to attend a rosary for the deacon who died in a car accident last friday. He was dressed in his deacon vestments, and had the most peaceful smile on his face. It was an amazing turnout--hundreds and hundreds of people came to pay their respects. The church was filled, and there were people spilling out onto the sidewalk. All the deacons from his class were there, and each of them spoke about him. A wonderful tribute to a very saintly person.

No, seriously

This brings up two questions:

Do you get to decide who you will marry, or did they give you a rulebook?

Do you get to perform the other usual stuff besides weddings?

There are guidelines about who can get married, and what is required.

As far as the other, we don't do circumcisions, if that's what you mean. But we can baptize, preach, officate at funerals and so on...

what a beautiful place for a retreat! wouldn't i love to go there. :)

i'm sorry about the deacon's death. you describe the rosary service in a very moving way.

may i ask what the title of your post means?

You know, I forgot that I had that title on there. This was going to be a completely different post, but I couldn't seem to put the words together so I erased and started over on a completely different subject, and never changed the title.

The words are something Arlina said in her sleep the other night. She has started talking in her sleep--I think it has to do with all the narcotics she's on. But she comes up with some really interesting stuff. One night she started singing!

The most interesting thing, though, was this morning--she woke up and her pajama bottoms were gone. We found them on the floor at the foot of the bed--both legs tied in knots! We just started laughing.
