I took these either the day of or the day after you had posted some people pictures you had taken in "Trauma". I am pretty uncomfortable taking pictures of strangers, but did so anyway that day, inspired by you. It was fun!
That's great to hear. I think taking photos of people is good fun too. Its also very challenging, I'll expect you'll have found and leads to many shots being discarded, but when you do get ones like these it's very satisfying.
Mine too. He was sitting in Golden Gate Park collecting signatures for a fictitious petition, and asking for a buck or two. I gave him a couple f dollars and he let me take his picture. We both came away from the interaction enriched.
You do in image what I used to do with words. I love these. They are just so full of soul. And I agree the last one is just so gloriously alive. He's my fave too.
No, not at all. I just had a pause in writing people down. I think I got to the point where I ran out of inspiration from them and moved to more fictional, introspective things. As for writing, I don't think I could stop if I tried. :) And I wouldn't try.
After I took it, she looked up at me with the same expression for a second, and then turned back. I would love to know what she was thinking.
When my grandma was alive, she acted in a short film in this building (the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco). The story was about her hearing a voice in the crowd that brought back memories of a long-lost love. This picture reminded me of that.
I really like these shots a lot. There'a s community that I used to belong to called anthrophoto that would really appreciate them as well.
In your experience, are people generally pretty willing to have their picture taken? I am attempting a photo project that documents various parts of the city I live in, and I have to say, I've run into some trouble now and again. People seem generally uncomfortable with me taking a picture either of them or of their business (motel, bar, etc.).

It kind of depends on the situation. For all except the last of these, I didn't ask. I try to be unobtrusive if I can, and not make it obvious that I'm taking their picture.
I will occasionally ask people if I can take their picture, and respect their wishes if they say no. Generally I'll strike up a conversation with them first and get to know them a little. If I am taking pictures of kids, I will always ask their parent.
Are those your pictures at the stateofgrace site? I like them--I hae some signs of bars and such that I have never posted. It ahs always interested me.

Interesting. If I take shots of people, I tend to act the same way. I don't think I've ever asked someone's permission for fear they'd start a fight. Then again, a lot of the people/places I take photos of are in the really bad parts of town. But, those parts make for the best shots sometimes.

Yes, those are moy photos. Thanks for the kind words! :)
I've got to get out and continue with that series. Other things in life sometimes preclude these kinds of hobbies, but I really want to make an effort to pick it back up again.
