I'm not always thinking about the huge life-changing decisions I might make one of these days. Sometimes it's just little things--interesting things--things that would be cool to do, but wouldn't necessarily change the course of my life.

I went out for espresso this morning (I skipped Mass, but may repent and go to the 5pm), and started wondering if there were people out there who hire themselves out to teach photography. Not a class--more like a guide.

There are fishing guides who you can hire for a week and they will take you out to the trout streams and teach you to fly fish. A week-long crash course.

I would like to find someone who does that with a camera--someone who would take you out to different venues--landscapes, cityscapes, portraits--and teach you how to shoot. Maybe spend a few hours in a camera shop and talk about different lenses and filters and such.

I'm not interested in fly fishing anymore, but I would like to learn how to use my camera.

i know in the east bay there is a man who takes people through one of the state/county parks and helps you like that (i really wanted to do it, but it was out of my cost range). i actually contacted the guy and he sent me an email about it, let me check if i still have it!

Is his name Richard Beebe? He is on my friend's list. I've thought about attending one of his days.

but I would like to learn how to use my camera.

I should learn this as well, so can relate.

But, don't forget one thing: even with technical proficiency, certain things cannot always be taught: an eye for beauty, the off-beat or unusual, the hidden moment --- which you already possess.

That is true. I do get the sense that although I know a little, it is motly just guesswork and luck. I want to know why my pictures turn out the was they do (or don't!!).

Joe's gone out with Richard Knepp as a guide, with groups of people. I'm sure other photographers do. Joe has considered doing it himself, in fact. You might talk to this guy, too. He does most of his work in the east bay, but more on your side of it, around Mount Diablo. He might know of someone closer to Sacramento.

Richard Knepp sounds interesting--I like that Redwoods one he is putting together.

I'm not even thinking that it has to be close to Sacramento. What I envision is spending a week somewhere where there are diverse settings--maybe the East Coast or the Southwest. And to have it be somewhere I have never been would be even more interesting.

Yeah, because the photos you share are really, really dull and uninspiring. Right.

There's a rhyme I'm trying to think that doesn't quite come to mind . . . something about pants on fire.

there would probably be lots of takers for someone with a service like that.
why don't you look into it yourself? you seem to be well-suited for it.

When I read your post the first time, I didn't catch the last sentence. I thought you were going to be the guide. I was going to sign up! Then I realized what you meant. You are too humble. You have a truly gifted eye. While you might enjoy a guide, you certainly don't need one.

Late post not about cameras

Mike I'm glad that you don't always think about those life changing decisions. They will come to you in time. In the meantime, keep on keeping on.
