They looked sick and stoned and strangely dressed And no one showed from the local press But I watched 'em walk through the bottomland And I wished I played in a rock & roll band

Current Music:gillian welch and david rawlings--april the 14th
(Also, I went to college with Gillian Welch - never met her personally, but my ex did. Almost asked her out. She ain't southern. The accents she uses when she talks is an affectation. Damned talented musician, though.)
i love that song, i love gillian welch and have seen her at the fillmore once - i didn't notice her having an affected accent (and i know where she's from and don't think you have to be from a certain part of the US to play a certain kind of music). anyway, just my take on that :)
I don't think so either - if your voice sounds great singing country, then belt it out! And perhaps she's dropped the accent - haven't seen an interview with her in some time. But it seemed darned funny at the time - the people at UCSC who had known her wasn't sure where her country drawl had come from. ;)
