these guys hate me.

not the ducks--they're just bystanders.
it's the geese.
i think they remember me from a couple of years ago when arlina and i were in the park and i didn't give them any bread.
that was the day we decided to go to italy.
arlina thought it was so funny that i would have a conflict with a bird.

i walk in the park almost every day now, and have to walk past this pair whenever i go around the duck pond.
they seem to pick me out for abuse.
they crowd me to one side of the path and honk at me.
if i stop and look at them, they lower their heads and run at me.
cameras enrage them.
i usually move on.

one of these days i'm going to call their bluff.

A goose bit my sister once.

Actually, it was me. The pond behind my house has a resident flock of Canada geese. Ill-tempered things at times, especially if they think you should have food for them and you don't (or worse, if you did have food for them and you've just run out). One pair had built a nest within sight of the path, which I wasn't aware of at the time; the male charged up to me out of nowhere while I was walking past and took a chomp on my leg. As I walked off, he stood in the middle of the path yelling something about how I should come back and he'd bite my kneecaps off.

I think this is the funniest thing I've read all day!

You sound like Sawyer and the boar. :-D
Doesn't it feel good to have your picture done for the day?

I would probably post earlier more often, but i am always thinking a better shot is going to come along. I love coming up with an idea at 11:30 pm!

I have to book off to work soon, and won't be back until midnight, so this was my last chance.

Actually....apologies, but this post made me laugh also.

But; be careful, geese can be SKEERY! Maybe toss them some bread crumbs sometime and see if they change their tune toward you.
:)

Geese are territorial critters, and they're willing to enforce it with highly aggressive behavior, including the above mentioned chunk-taking. I doubt they're bluffing, but you're welcome to collect as many nasty blue bruises as you care to in order to prove me wrong.

When I was in high school, my best friend's family had a domestic goose. She was, for whatever reason, very territorial about the back steps. She used to sit under them and reach out to bite whoever was walking down them. We all got very good at sailing gracefully down without touching a step or dropping whatever food we were inevitably carrying.

haha--maybe one day my picture will be of a leg with a big chunk taken out of it!

Eat them!

When I was a kid, we had a white cockerel (rooster for you North Americans) that was taller than I was, or so it seemed. I think he was called the "Nipper". He used to attack me each time I arrived home from school, and I'd reach the house in tears.

My parents left a stick out for me to fight him off with, but when that didn't work out, they made me a nice stew.

A bit tough, but very satisfying.

My mother keeps geese, and one of the males has it out for her. He does that head-lowering and nipping thing whenever she is in the yard... and she's the hand that feeds the ingrate!

They make great watch dogs for that reason. They also trim the grass and eat palmetto bugs.

I think you should call their bluff. Face off with them and flap your arms. Please bring someone to take pictures.

Geese are scary.
There was a gaggle that hung out by Roselyn Bakery's back door, in Indianapolis, I guess because they fed them leftover baked goods. Then the geese moved to the front door and I simply wouldn't go there if the geese were out. They were eventually deported.
They took away their tiny little green cards and moved them back to small villages in Canada. Okay...I made that last part up.

Yeah, well, Bodie and I want this kind of job. We want to scare geese- off bakeries, corporate woods, golf courses. Geese must poop in good surroundings- are there still rivers available?
As the stock market is not doing well for me, keep me posted of scaring geese jobs.

If this is the park I'm assuming it is, then the geese there have it in for me, too. They attacked me once when I was a little kid, and I've been scared at war with them ever since.
