I have a really bizarre anecdote about pink flamingos.... In a bizarre round-about way, a girl from my high school died because she took some pink flamingos from the yard of a stranger.
When she (a nice, good kid, in advanced classes) was a senior in high school, she was driving around one afternoon with a bunch of her friends. They drove by this woman's house who had many, many plastic pink flamingos in her yard. Probably on a dare, Renee jumped out of the car and took one (maybe more.... I don't know). Well, one thing led to another and Renee was arrested for theft. She went to court and got put on probation. When she went to visit her probation officer, she met a guy who claimed to be there for similar circumstances (some small, seemingly forgivable thing). Despite having just met him, she offered to give him a ride home. He killed her, put her in the trunk, and torched the car. I know the guy was caught, but I don't know anything more about him or what happened to him.
True story. I can't remember the exact year. I guess it must have been '88 or '89.
