it's a dry heat

I'm in Bakersfield, which is a place in the middle of California. It's hot. I'm here for my friend's ordination tomorrow. Did I mention that it is hot? The view out my hotel window is of a big patch of brown dirt with an oil storage tank. It all looks like that, and it's hot. We went to Outback Steakhouse and drank lots of iced tea. Now it's bedtime and I can't sleep, and it's hot.

Is it hot there?

:)

Grab an Outback Special for me please - with a caesar salad and a baked potato. Hold the sour cream.

Stay cool.

Too much iced tea at suppertime!

I remember Bakersfield, but only vaguely, from my childhood. Keep yourself hydrated tomorrow!

I did, and now I have to pee every hour!

*snort* You're so suave.

I like a man with a working pair of kidneys ;-)

Is someone in your position supposed to say "pee"?

It does not all look like that. :) There are places so verdant and rich that you'll think you're in an oasis. There are places that glow gold and red and ochre when the sun sets behind the bluffs. There's a park that has a river that runs through it, where peacocks wander free.

But yeah, some of it is brown, oily dirt. And it is, no escaping it, hot.

Somehow I knew that when I describe Bakersfield in the way I did, something was going to come along and change my mind.

I found that park and walked in it this morning. I had a very moving spiritual experience there, which will likely be tonight's subject. It is a beautiful park.

It was a nice ordination--small and intimate. Steve is a Benidictine monk--one of our teachers for my deacon program. He gave the eulogy at Arlina's funeral. He said he felt her presence there today.

Flyin's Shoes came on when I was reading this post. Somehow it seems to fit, even though the lyrics have nothing to do with your post. :-)

Flyin' shoes--I love that song. When I got home tonight I listened to the Lyle Lovett version.

I bet the cow was fresh. It probably just walked down the street.

(The first thing I think of when I think of Bakersfield is that huge cow ranch off the interstate. The one you can smell miles away.)

The Harris Ranch--a good argument for becoming vegeterian.

It feels Desert August-like here. Lethargy is my companion.

Bakersfield is a place that reminds me of the Rolling Stones.

I knew this photo was by you as soon as it popped on my monitor.

I liked that.
