July 28--little black book
Jul. 28th, 2006 09:45 pm
I know someone who has a little black book. Every time she hears about a book that sounds interesting, she writes it in the little black book for future reference.
I write the names of books on scraps of paper and on the back of envelopes. I find them scattered all over the house, but never when I am actually thinking about something to read.
She let me look through the little black book today, and I said, "I want one of these!"
My favorite book so far this year has been Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson.
What's yours?

Date: 2006-08-01 06:47 am (UTC)It is for anyone who has survived the trenches and jungles of life. It is brillant. Trust me on this: READ IT.
Even the NY Times put it on their list of best novels in the last 25 years. I agree.
It is also the perfect book for writers and students of writing or anyone who loves the craft. The form he uses, the way he weaves his tales, the down to earth unassuming tone, the crisp cleaness of the writing. It is that rare marrige of form and content. It is a humble book. It is a masterpiece.
I celebrate 22 years this month...trust me. It is your story, it is my story, it is our story. And somehow he found a way to tell it.
Read it now, save it for a rainy day, read it in conflict, read it in peace. It is all those things.
ps. I get no commision...just read it:)
