My nieces were confirmed yesterday, and my wife and I stood as their sponsors. They are growing so fast! The older one is now less than a half-inch from being as tall as me, and she's only 12. It's not like she's a giant or anything, I'm just short.

The confirmation was good. We had the "Nice Bishop", who exemplifies the role of shepherd to his flock. He is so gentle and caring. He even recognized me and made a point of saying hello--what a guy!

After the confirmation we went out for chinese food and I exteded my streak of eating at least one fortune cookie a day to 8 days (it's a lent thing).

I am unfamiliar with most of the rituals of most religions. Can you explain to me what the "confirmation" is?

Confirmation is one of the sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church, of which there are seven. It is one of the sacraments of initiation, along with baptism and eucharist. It is, in effect, being sealed with the Holy Spirit, and confirming the baptismal promises that were made on your behalf when you were an infant.

For many, it is a rite of passage, since it often happens at around the age of 13, although in some places it is now done at the same time as baptism.

They are! When they first arrived from the Philippines 5 years ago, they were scrawny and shy. They're still somewhat shy, but have grown into lovely young ladies. We don't have children of our own, so all our parental pride is invested in them and their siblings.

He's only been a bishop for a few years. You can't really see his crozier, but it is really cool too.
